Die Welt blickt auf TPE

The world focuses on TPE

Applications featuring thermoplastic elastomers are increasingly more extensive and the market is practically booming. These materials are also gradually forming the focus of national and international events. For example, the international TPE Conference which took place in Berlin this November and brought together the leading material manufacturers, mixed operations, direct suppliers and suppliers to the sector as well as end consumers. Featuring first-class speakers, the conference program dealt with a range of materials generally summarized as TPEs and including TPU, TPV, TPO, EPDM and styrene block copolymers.

ACTEGA DS was also asked to make a contribution to the area of „Applications in the food packaging, medical and pharmaceutical Industry“. Alix Reeves, Senior Conference Producer, summed up at the end of the event: "This year's program offered many application-based discourses and presented some real international innovations among technologies and materials which represented the extent of advantages of TPE over other materials."

The Wissens- und Innovationsnetzwerk Polymertechnik (WIP) also dedicated itself to this issue in November within the framework of the Plastics in Medical Technology Forum. The supporting exhibition involving ACTEGA DS provided the opportunity for extensive discussions on trends, innovative technologies and products as well as the regulatory environment for the plastics industry.

Grundlegende Neuordnung

Fundamental new regulation

Richtlinien dagegen müssen zunächst in jedem einzelnen Land in nationales Recht übernommen werden, was erfahrungsgemäß in unterschiedlichen Umsetzungen mündet.

In the production of food, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and medical products, the health of consumers, patients and specialist personnel is a top priority. This must also be reflected in due diligence concerning production and production equipment as well as in the sensitive selection of the right and tested raw materials and substances. And it is also reflected in the variety of guidelines, regulations and certifications required.

The European Commission guidelines governing medical products and in-vitro diagnostics are now facing fundamental revision. At the end of September, the European Commission approved a policy paper „Package on innovation in health“ which will summarize and substitute all previous guidelines „Active Implantable Medical Devices Directive“ (AIMDD; 90/385/EEC) und „Medical Devices Directive“ (MDD; 93/42/EEC). The difference between the accepted guidelines applicable for the past 20 years or so is that the revisions are summarized in directives. These have the advantage that they will come into force immediately in all countries of the EU whereas guidelines have to be adopted in national law by each individual country first which tends to lead to various implementations thereof – a practice which is to be avoided in future.

The basis for the new directives also includes a range of important new product categories which have not been recorded to date, the demand for an enquiry and inspection board, requests directed at companies to employ at least one Regulatory Affairs or Quality Management expert in connection with medical and technical medical products, standardized technical descriptions and other revisions. This draft must now be submitted to the European Parliament and the European Council for approval. As soon as the final version has been published in the official European Commission journal – currently anticipated in 2014 – the directive will come into force within 20 days and become fully binding within the following three years, whereby the Commission urgently advises manufacturers and users to adopt the corresponding precautionary modifications well before expiry of these deadlines "for the benefit and protection of consumers, patients and specialist medical personnel".

ACTEGA DS compounds are distinguished by maximum quality, food and medical safety which makes them suitable for all areas in the direct consumer environment. Our thermoplastic elastomers can be easily dyed, comply with BfR, EU and FDA guidelines and display very good flow properties. These materials dispense entirely with phthalates and have passed the skin and mucous membrane irritation test. They are therefore also particularly suitable for cosmetic applications and packaging.

While great care is taken when it comes to the ingredients in creams, lotions, powders and oils which do not trigger any allergic reactions, irritations or incompatibility, the influence of the containers holding cosmetic products is often neglected. Substances are not only capable of migrating out of food packaging into the product. This equally applies to cosmetics which have direct contact with skin from every perspective and via which undesirable substances can be absorbed unintentionally. In order to protect consumers, it must therefore be ensured that the materials on which these containers are based are unable to have a negative influence, e.g. by substituting PVC with thermoplastic elastomers which do not represent such a migration potential as no harmful plasticizers need to be used. Our TPEs are free of latex, silicone and phthalates making them eminently suitable for the equally sensitive area of cosmetics.
