Sicherheit und Zuverlässigkeit von Werkstoffen

Safety and reliability of materials

Compared to other material classes, plastics offer a range of technical processing advantages as well as manifold approaches to material development. These include bio-compatible and sterilizable material types as well as foils with barrier features and nano- or micro-structures in the area of packaging. Plastics are therefore very popular in manufacturing for medical technology and clinical applications.

They can be used for inexpensive disposable items through high-quality implants which are exposed to maximum loads within the human body over longer periods of time. Top priority is therefore attributed to the safety and reliability of materials as well as the respective manufacturing process applied. The potential lying dormant in the extensive area of synthetic or organic polymers was revealed at the MEDTEC (26 – 28 Feb.) which has just concluded with great success as regards the number of exhibitors and visitors as well as the level of satisfaction within the sector.

Migrationsarm, chemisch und thermisch beständig, flexibel
Low-migration, chemically- and thermally-resistant, flexible

At ACTEGA DS, we availed of the opportunity to present our ProvaMed® portfolio within this environment: tailored plastic compounds for medical technology and pharmaceuticals such as our highly-transparent TPE (thermoplastic elastomers) for medical tubes. TPE is a material compound distinguished by its bio-compatibility, sterilization capacity, buckle resistance and ability to co-extrude several materials as required for molding several layers in a tube, for example.

The effects on high-energy gamma radiation required for sterilization must be avoided particularly as regards the sealing material for syringe plungers as otherwise they age faster as well as becoming brittle, altering their mechanical features or they can simply start to leak. In order to comply with these requirements, we have developed a corresponding TPE recipe.

A high degree of flexibility, softness, malleability and transparency is also required of materials for manufacturing drain tubes which also need to be transparent for x-rays and cobalt beams. We have developed a special TPE recipe for such applications: sterilizable, autoclavable and in line with cytotoxicity tests to ISO 10993-5 as well as bio-compatibility tests to USP Class VI.

...as well as not to mention easy in terms of handling and child-safe – these are the requirements on packaging in the medical and pharmaceutical environment. Whether for self-medication at home or in hospital, patient safety is of utmost importance – a demand voiced within the framework of the recent Pharmapack Europe. Accordingly, when selecting the basic materials, the development of products and ideas in this area must also focus on both patients and medical personnel as well as the packaged product which needs to be protected from migration from the packaging.

This product authenticity and purity is indispensable particularly in the area of medication or sterilized goods for medical applications. After all, development is headed in the direction of tailor-made packaging solutions.

In order to comply with the requirements on medical and pharmaceutical packaging, ACTEGA DS has developed TPE recipes with the lowest migration potential, offering bio-compatibility, protection from mucous membrane irritations, and free of PVC, phthalates, silicon and latex. Furthermore, our materials also display maximum strength accompanied by a high degree of flexibility while colored compounds facilitate product distinctness.

Convince yourself of these and other customized and tailored polymer products which we can develop and produce especially for you.

Kosmetikverpackungen: Prädestiniert für Kunststoffe

Cosmetic packaging: predestined for plastics

The cosmetics market is subject to extremely intensive competition. Apart from aromatic substances, decorative and caring components, major significance is also attributed to the packaging which aims to underline the elegance and luxury of products in the form of high-quality design, complex applications and high surface quality. Packaging is obliged to comply with numerous functional and sales-promoting features, whereby this not only involves the exterior packaging but often the integration of numerous additional functions such as twist mechanisms, seals or hinges. High transparency, glossy surfaces, high strength, rigidity, above-average color intensity, media resistance and easy processability are all requirements placed on materials for cosmetics packaging. High-quality plastics are needed which are capable of complying with these requirements while enabling a high degree of design freedom. The requirement profile calls for the use of high-performance TPE (thermoplastic elastomers) such as the ProvaMed® TPE offered by ACTEGA DS.

In addition to the high degree of elasticity offered by this material, its media resistance is also of significance. On the one hand, the ingredients in cosmetics such as ethereal oils, aromatic substances or fats can affect the plastic packaging, damaging it or reducing the service life of individual components. On the other hand, interactions can take place between individual substances or between the packaging and contents. But packaging aims to protect the contents within. This also means protecting such contents from any type of damage or from drying up, for example. At the same time, the active agents should stay pure and original. The goal therefore is to prevent diffusion or migration from the plastic into the contents. This is also necessary as these contents usually come into direct contact with the skin. ProvaMed® TPE display maximum migration freedom as they do not contain any PVC, phthalates (plasticizers), silicon or latex. For the protection of contents and for the safety of consumers.
